How would you get rid of outdated beliefs about clean diesel technology?

The Fiat Tipo hatchback and sedan came to market in 2017 and the 1.3-litre turbodiesel sedan derivative is particularly fuel efficient with a claimed fuel consumption figure of 3.7 L/100 km. This engine offers 70 kW and 200 Nm of torque to deliver perky performance. Unfortunately, this engine is only offered on the Tipo sedan. The Fiat Tipo 1.3 Multijet Easy sedan 


In the 1970s and 80s, diesel passenger cars had a bad reputation because they were loud, smelly, underpowered and plagued with failures. Unfortunately, this public perception of diesel technology has persisted and is still unfairly influenced by these outdated beliefs.

Modern technological advancements, however, have drastically changed diesel technology for the better. The new technology, now called “clean diesel” creates 25% less CO2, 30% better fuel economy and 50% more torque as compared to its gasoline powered counterpart. Clean diesels do, however, come with an initial price premium and usually a higher price for diesel at the pump. However, numerous studies done by the University of Michigan Transportation Institute have shown you end up saving anywhere from $2,000-$7,000 by owning a clean diesel vehicle after just 3 years.

The old stereotypes and price premiums have made it difficult to get the general public’s interest in clean diesels even though the data being generated is overwhelmingly positive. Clean diesels need to be rebranded, and we need your help to correct the inaccurate perceptions and bring the clean diesel to the forefront of the general consumer’s mind when considering their next new vehicle purchase.

STEAM-POWERED CARS: CALIFORNIA'S 1970S SMOG SOLUTION

Steam-powered cars may sound like a shout-out to the early 1900s, but in 1970s California the idea was building up a real head of, umm, steam.

In 1969 California State Senator Nicholas Petris, a Democrat from Oakland, proposed a bill that would have banned the sale of any vehicle with a gasoline or diesel-powered internal combustion engine by 1975. Needless to say, that bill went nowhere quickly. But if such legislation had been taken seriously, what would have replaced the internal combustion engine? Well, in the 1970s California state legislators thought they had found the answer in cars that run on steam. Yes, steam.

When we think about the history of the automobile we often imagine the battle between the gas-powered cars that dominate our streets today and the electric car (or gas-electric hybrids) that have a rich history dating back to the turn of the 20th century. But few people remember the other technologies that fought hard for their place in the future, including steam.


Starting with legislation proposed in 1968, the state of California began experimenting with steam buses, contracting with companies to build three of them. All three were demonstrated in Sacramento on April 26, 1972. But only focusing on low emission buses wasn't seen as doing enough to combat the smog. In 1972 the California Assembly passed legislation which contracted two companies to develop steam-powered cars: Aerojet Liquid Rocket Company of Sacramento and Steam Power Systems of San Diego.

The two companies took different approaches with their respective steam technologies. Aerojet installed a steam turbine into a Chevy Vega, while Steam Power Systems chose to build its Dutcher car (named for the company's founder, Cornelius Dutcher) from scratch. The Dutcher car was finished and successfully tested in 1974 though neither car went into production. By 1975 the California Assembly was again back to buses, along with allusions in the press that these experiments with steam were little more than hand-outs to some of the contractors who just so happened to be major financial contributors to the state's Democratic Party.

You can see a Dutcher test vehicle on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The steam car is on loan from one of the better-known car collectors that zip around Southern California 







For all the efforts of companies and governments to get consumers excited about steam cars, the idea obviously never took off. The biggest problem with the steam-powered car? It pumped out less pollution, but was quite a fuel-hog. The fuel used in steam engines of the early 1970s was usually kerosene, but diesel was also an option. Naturally, the last thing people wanted when so many had to line up just to fill up their tanks was to use more energy than they already did.

نافذة على العالم - قال المهندس هاني الخولي، العضو المنتدب بشركة النصر للسيارات، إن مشروع إنتاج سيارات الكهرباء، هو مشروع قومي، لابد من شكر القيادة السياسية عليه، مشيرا إلى أن مصر وصلت لمرحلة لابد أن يكون كل شىء فيها جديد ومتطور، موضحا أن هناك أكثر من محور تعمل الشركة فيه، مع وجود شريك أجنبي هو رقم 1 في صناعة السيارات الكهربائية وهي شركة صينية، وتم التفاهم معهم في العام السابق.

وأضاف، خلال مداخلة هاتفية مع الإعلامية ريهام إبراهيم والإعلامي عمرو خليل ببرنامج "من مصر" الذي يذاع على قناة cbc، أن السيارة الكهربائية الجديدة، بداية بيعها سيكون لـ"التاكسي" أو الأجرة، ثم إحلال السيارات الحكومية، وبعدها سيتم طرحها للشراء من قبل المواطن العادي، موضحا أن تلك السيارة تملك مقومات رائعة، كما أن صيانتها شديدة البساطة وليس معقدة كالسيارة العادية.

وأوضح، أنه جرى الاتفاق على إبرام عقود مع الجانب الصيني بنهاية الشهر الجاري، ويتم الآن إحياء كل شىء قديم في الشركة حتى تكون مجهزة لإنتاج تلك السيارة، موضحا أن هناك خطة بالتنسيق مع شركات عالمية بعمل محطات شحن سريع في كل المناطق.

The AM-RB 001 is the lovechild Red Bull and Aston Martin are creating. It’s meant to push the boundaries of today’s cars and give a new meaning to what a hypercar is.
Today Aston Martin announced their technical partners who they’ll be working with to put all the pieces of the car in the right place and more importantly making every piece as good as possible.
Probably the most exciting part of the statement was about the engine, we knew it’d be a naturally aspirated V12 but now we’ve got some very interesting details about that monster of an engine.
It’ll be a massive high-revving 6.5L V12 (the One-77 had a 7.3L one) but it’ll be handed over to the guys from Cosworth. They’re the same guys who made the most competitive F1 engines in history along with some of the best road going engines as well.
Hooked up to the engine is a 7-speed paddle shift transmission designed and produced by Ricardo. If you haven’t heard about them, they also make the transmission for the Bugatti Chiron. It’s still unclear whether it’ll be a single or double clutch since the AM-RB 001 is on a massive diet to get to the magical mark of 1.000 kg.
Alongside the V12, Aston Martin has decided that it would need some battery power to pack a little more punch. And as with all the other components in the car, they went for the best player on the market right now, which is Rimac. They not only produce their Concept_One but also supply technology to bigger players in the industry. Newey’s child will have the most advanced lightweight hybrid system on the market.
The key to getting that 1:1 power:weight ratio is not only power but also the weight of the car. The monocel will be as light and strong as possible with the help of their old friends at Multimatic. They also developed the monocel for the One-77 and Vulcan.
We still don’t really have any solid specs yet but with partners like that and one of the best F1 teams backing you up. It’ll be a monster.

It wasn't long ago that we scoffed at the idea of a three-cylinder engine in a hatchback. Back then it was generally accepted that smaller and mid-level cars were powered by four-cylinder engines, larger cars received six-cylinder treatment in various arrangements and configurations. Ten- and twelve-cylinder engines were reserved for exotic machinery, bucket lists and bedroom walls.
Nowadays, as is the case with almost everything, everything is more or less turned on its head, apart from 10- and 12-cylinder engines which have all but been consigned to the history books. Certainly, three-cylinder engines have made their way into almost every market segment, from small city runabouts to turbocharged supercars (think BMW i8, which is of course aided by electrification). Indeed the diminutive '3-pot' has become the mainstay of manufacturers who are under constant pressure to lower emission outputs and fleet fuel consumption figures.
Perhaps only the SUV category has been somewhat shy to offer 3-cylinder turbo engines. For good reason - SUVs are generally quite heavy. Yes, they're fairly popular their smaller and lighter Crossovers siblings, but for mid- and full-size SUVs, there really is no replacement for displacement. Until now that is with news coming though that Volvo will launch its first 3-cylinder powertrain in the new compact premium XC40 SUV.
New car, new engine and also new market ambitions as the XC40 represents the first time the Swedish marque will enter the compact premium SUV segment. Back to that engine though... The all-new 1.5 litre T3, three-cylinder, direct-injection petrol engine is the first three-cylinder engine in the company’s 91-year history, and has been developed in-house alongside Volvo's other petrol and diesel Drive-E engines. Developing 115kW and 265Nm of torque the 3-pot will be mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, with the option of an eight-speed auto to be offered next year. The new three-cylinder powertrain has been deliberately designed for integration into Twin Engine layout, meaning a hybridised XC90 will be added to the range in the future.
Due to launch in this year, initially, the XC40 will only be available in T5 185 kW and D4 140 kW guise, with the T3 set to debut later in the year. Buyers will have plenty of choice in terms of trim levels, including the familiar range of Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription options. Inscription, headlining the XC40 line-up, ups the ante offering a range of exterior styling choices and the choice of 18”, 19”, 20”, or even 21” Black Diamond Cut rims plus model-specific car colours. Inside Inscription models you'll get a fancy new crystal gear knob and attractive Driftwood decorations. Nice.

Toyota has truly outdone itself with the new GR Yaris. It is a compact hot hatch model with extraordinary mechanization and a whole new level of power, which premiered at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The Toyota GR Yaris will compete with models such as the Ford Fiesta ST, Renault Clio RS and Volkswagen Polo GTI. At least when it comes to dimensions, because in terms of power, the Japanese supermini is way ahead. Also, he owns something his rivals don't have – all-wheel drive.
How did Toyota go about it? Well, with the combination of the front of the GA-B platform that debuted the new generation of Yaris and the rear of the GA-C platform. This enables the implementation of the AWD system. Also, a new suspension and a brake system were inserted.

When it comes to brakes, the front ones have 356mm ventilation discs and four-piston brake pliers, while the rear wheels feature 297mm two-piston brake pliers.
The heart of the GR Yaris is a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that develops 257 hp (192 kW) and 360 Nm of torque. The Japanese market version is slightly stronger, developing 268 hp (200 kW) and 370 Nm of torque.

The unit is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, through which power is sent to all wheels. In the Circuit equipment package, the GR Yaris also features performance 18-inch suspension and wheels. They are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s 225/40 tires.
The car itself has three driving modes, namely: Normal, Sport and Track. Through them, the torque is split between the front and rear axles in the ratio of 60:40, 30:70 and 50:50 respectively. With a total weight of just 1,280 kilograms and a power ratio of 1 hp every 4.9 kilograms, the GR Yaris accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 5.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 230 km / h.

When it comes to exterior design, the GR Yaris has three doors and a drop-down roof. There is also a wide air intake at the front, a roof spoiler and a diffuser at the back of the car.

The interior is dominated by black leather and Alcantara, with red seams. The front seats are sporty and have a GR strap on the head restraints. Also, GR graphics are on the dashboard.
Specifically, the GR Yaris is Toyota's second GR model, after the Supra. This model will be assembled at the Motomachi factory and details of price and availability will be known soon.

The Koenigsegg Gemera´s engine is small. At the same time, it is big when it comes to power, torque and sound. Still, it is small when it comes to emissions and consumption. In short - it is a contradiction of an engine, developed and created by Koenigsegg and its sister company, Freevalve. Therefore, it has been named the “Tiny Friendly Giant” – or TFG for short. Being a two-liter three-cylinder engine, the TFG is future-proofed given its extreme performance, reduced fuel consumption and lowered emissions – not to forget its ability to run on second-generation CO2 neutral renewable fuels.

A man and his dream

Like many young men, Christian von Koenigsegg was fascinated by machinery as a boy. He even went so far as to dream about creating his perfect sports car. In stark contrast to the rest of us, however, Christian actually went ahead and turned that dream into reality – at just 22 years of age.
With extraordinary determination and vision, Christian explored the limits of both technology and innovation to create the Supercar of his dreams – the Koenigsegg CC. The Koenigsegg CC was the manifestation of a dream and its successful completion gave Christian the courage to continue, and to share his quest for perfection with others. Thus, the car company that bears his name was born.
The story of Koenigsegg is as fascinating and unique as the cars themselves. Christian was only 5 years old when he first saw a stop-motion film from Norway about a bicycle repairman who builds his own racing car. The film must have made an impression, as a young Christian grew up dreaming of creating the perfect sports car. Some 17 years later, and against all odds, he did just that.
Christian showed an early interest in design and enjoyed the challenges posed by discovering new technical solutions. As a young boy, he dismantled video recorders and toasters, just to see how they worked and whether they could be improved.
As a teenager, he was known as the best moped tuner in town and in the early 1990’s, around his 18th birthday, Christian began to work more seriously with technical innovation and came up with some interesting ideas.
One of the innovations was called the Chip Player. He believed that one day, computer memory chips would be able to store an entire CD’s worth of data and that it would probably be a cheaper way to buy and store music. He conducted some patent searches for a musical device that would play chips instead of discs. In the end, however, no one seemed interested in the idea, so Christian moved on, not realizing that a few years later his idea would become the norm.
In 1991, he invented a new solution for joining floor planks together without adhesive or nails. He called it Click, as the profile enabled the planks to simply click together. Christian presented this technology to his father-in-law in Belgium, who ran a flooring factory. He rejected the idea, saying that if it was viable, someone would have come up with it a long time ago. Christian then showed the concept to a few other floor manufacturers who also dismissed it. In 1995, a Belgian and a Swedish company patented the exact same solution as Christian’s Click floor – they even called it Click! This innovation has now turned into a multi-billion dollar industry…

The man behind the name

The Koenigsegg Jesko, the all-new megacar shown at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, is named in honour of a special person in the history of Koenigsegg Automotive.
Jesko von Koenigsegg’s contribution to Koenigsegg Automotive pre-dates the existence of the company. It was Jesko who took a young Christian von Koenigsegg to see Pinchcliffe Grand Prix, the Norwegian animated film that inspired the dream that would eventually become Koenigsegg Automotive.
It was Jesko and his wife, Brita, who nurtured that dream. They encouraged their son’s interest in practical engineering; rebuilding monkey bikes and mopeds, and tuning boat engines.
Together, they showed him what business acumen looked like – Jesko as a successful serial entrepreneur and Brita with her renowned millinery business in Stockholm.
In 1995, having recently sold his business, Jesko joined Christian in Olofstrom during the earliest days of the company for what was supposed to be a six-week stint of assistance.
Those six weeks turned into 5 years…
Jesko became the first Chairman of the Koenigsegg board while he poured his life – and much of his life savings – into the future of the Koenigsegg company. His business experience proved invaluable as he built an experienced board that would put structures and practices in place to carry the company into the future.
“The board understood that the vision for this car was not just a young man’s dream. It was driven by a fierce passion that would accept nothing but the best” he said.
Jesko attended one of Koenigsegg’s first ever vehicle displays at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. His interest in the company and his enjoyment of promoting it have never faded.
Today, more than a decade since ending his day-to-day involvement with the company, Jesko still dons his suit and tie to attend the Koenigsegg stand at the Geneva Motor Show every year.

A life lived to the full

Jesko’s life has revolved around his three greatest passions – his family, his work, and his love of horses.
Jesko’s love of horses and horse racing has been a lifelong affair, stemming from his father, Harald, who bred and raced horses as a gentleman jockey. The Koenigsegg Jesko on display at Geneva is finished in white with green accents – the same colours worn by riders from the Koenigsegg stables. The love of horses is a passion that he later shared with his two daughters, though not with his son, Christian, who showed more interest in horsepower of a different kind.
Jesko spent 20 years as a successful amateur jockey and gave more than 40 years in voluntary service to the sport as an administrator and board member.
Jesko’s first love, of course, is his family.
He married Brita in 1968. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Now enjoying their retirement, Jesko and Brita continue to live a life of adventure that has seen them tour all four corners of the globe.
Koenigsegg Automotive would not be the company it is today were it not for the years of experience, support, hard work and investment from Jesko von Koenigsegg.
His entrepreneurial and adventurous spirit lives in his son, Christian, and continues to drive the company that bears their family name.
As Jesko turned 80 in November 2018, Christian could think of no more suitable way of honoring his father than by naming his next creation after him.
The timing also coincides with the 25th anniversary of Koenigsegg Automotive – the perfect backdrop to celebrate both man and machine.
It is with great pride that Koenigsegg Automotive honours the life of Jesko von Koenigsegg, and his contribution to our company, by naming its new megacar the Koenigsegg Jesko.

FreeValve AB, a sister corporation of Koenigsegg, have shown at the Guangzhou Motor Show a cam-less internal combustion engine by removing crucial parts, claiming fuel savings of near 20%. The engine installed in a Chinese made vehicle, Qoros 3 hatchback has 47% more power and 45% more torque over a similar capacity traditional engine.

The FreeValve concept, also known as fully variable valve actuation, offers independent control of the intake and exhaust valves, doing away completely with the camshaft, hence the term ‘cam-less’.
The company’s innovative design, placing electronic connectors between the rails and actuators, mean the system is able to ‘decide’ what air/fuel mixture is needed in response to driving conditions.
Valves are opened by hydraulic-pneumatic actuators and closed by spring or compressed air. This system is monitored with advanced sensors, controlling timing and lift – allowing the electronics to know the position of valves to within 1/10 of a millimeter in real time.
FreeValve have already tested this technology on the road with results showing a verified fuel consumption reduction of 12 – 17% compared with traditional direct injection and variable cams – significant performance improvements have also been achieved.

Although you may not have heard the name FreeValve before, you could be more familiar with their Chief Executive Officer, Christian von Koenigsegg – founder of the Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg. FreeValve are a subsidiary to the exotic car maker and the success of their development program could see the technology make its way into the supercar market.
In April this year, FreeValve AB also announced a partnership with Qoros Autos, a Chinese car maker. The partnership opens another avenue for the company to take their working concept and transfer technology to a production application for passenger vehicles.
