2018 Hyundai Santro AMT !!2018 Hyundai Santro will get an evolutionary design, all-new engines and an AMT gearbox.

4 upcoming AMT cars in 2018 - New Maruti WagonR to Hyundai Santro

Automated Manual Transmission-equipped cars have been rather quick in achieving wide popularity. The first mainstream car to offer an AMT was the Maruti Celerio. The car buyers were quick to appreciate the relatively lower selling price and ownership cost of AMT cars and soon, many cars came up with an AMT option. Moreover, there are at least five more cars that will soon join the AMT bandwagon. Here is a look at four upcoming AMT cars in 2018.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd will launch an all-new hatchback in August this year. Internally codenamed the AH2, this hatchback will find itself slotted between the Eon and the Grand i10. Rumours abound that this hatchback will revive the Santro moniker in India. The upcoming new-gen Santro is based on the last-generation i10's platform and is said to be powered by an updated version of the old i10's 1.1-litre petrol engine. Also, the new Santro will become the first-ever Hyundai car in India to offer an AMT. Prices of the new Santro are expected to start around the Rs. 3 lakh mark. The fully-loaded top-end trim can cost up to Rs. 5 lakh.

Another all-new tallboy that is headed our way is the next-gen Maruti WagonR. The all-new WagonR will be launched during this year's festive season and will have a totally new design. It will also have an updated version of the current K10 petrol engine that will likely offer more mileage. Moreover, the AMT option of the current car will be carried over to the next-gen version. This will allow the new WagonR to fend off the heat from the AMT-equipped new-gen Santro. Speculations are rife that the new WagonR will also offer a seven-seat variant that will be aimed at fleet operators and people with large families. The AMT should make the new-gen WagonR one of the most practical city cars around. Fingers crossed.
The Mahindra KUV100 is about to get an optional AMT. While details on the pricing and the variants aren't available at the moment, what's known is that the AMT will be available on both petrol and diesel variants. The petrol-powered KUV100 comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that outputs 82 bhp and 115 Nm. The KUV100 Petrol AMT will be a direct rival to the AMT-equipped petrol variant of the Maruti Ignis.
Mahindra KUV100 Diesel AMT
Like we said, even the diesel variant of the KUV100 will offer an AMT. The KUV100 Diesel AMT will go on to rival the diesel-sipping Ignis AMT. The KUV100 diesel is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-diesel motor that outputs 77 bhp and 190 Nm. Upon its launch, the KUV100 AMT will become the least priced Mahindra car to have an automatic gearshift technology. It's noteworthy here that this micro-SUV has pretty much failed to receive a positive response from car buyers. The upcoming AMT variants, however, should make the KUV100 at least somewhat more appealing.

Lets start with the diesel AMT. The new Maruti Suzuki Dzire gets the same 1.3-litre diesel engine that the last generation Swift Dzire got combined with the AMT 5-speed gearbox. The engine, a 4-cylinder turbo diesel makes 74 bhp of peak power and 190 Nm of peak torque. The 5-speed AMT unit is essentially an electronic controller on the 5-speed manual gearbox which means you still get the 28.4 kmpl fuel efficiency figure. Incidentally, that makes it the most fuel-efficient car in the country!

The combination of the diesel engine and the AMT gearbox makes a great pair and if you drive normally or sedately, there is barely any lag between shifts. The typical automatic ‘shift nod’ that you experience when an auto box shifts its gears is also absent at lower revs. In case you were wondering though, a ‘shift nod’ is the back and forth nodding movement that your head experiences when the car shifts gears in an automatic gearbox due to the sudden drop in power delivery and thus a change in the vehicle’s overall velocity.

Coming back to the car though, the Dzire AMT offers great drivability and feels smooth in start and stop traffic too. Floor the throttle pedal a little more though and you do get a bit of lag in the shifts. Maruti does not equip the AMT units with a sport mode like most other manufacturers. We think an addition of that sport mode would make the shifts a lot faster making the Dzire diesel AMT as much fun to drive hard as the manual is.

The petrol Maruti Suzuki Dzire engine remains the same 1.2-litre motor that makes 82 bhp and 113 Nm of torque. The big mechanical change in the new generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire though is the addition of the petrol engine with the AMT gearbox in addition to the normal 5-speed manual. Comparatively, the older Swift Dzire had a 4-speed conventional automatic and not the new AMT unit as the diesel had. The AMT unit in the Dzire petrol is the same one that the Ignis petrol AMT gets but with a retune towards a more comfortable and smoother shift pattern.

Unlike the diesel, there is a bit more of the shift nod phenomenon between gears at lower revs. But the gearbox does seem to have no shift shock or sudden shifting between gears though and the petrol revs as freely with the AMT as with the manual gearbox. Just like with the diesel though, the addition of a sports mode would have made the Dzire petrol automatic a much nicer car to drive as compared to how it currently is. That said, we did test both the AMTs on a hilly road with quite a steep incline and although there is no official hill hold or hill start assist, the gearbox does stop the car from rolling backwards after abou a foot or so and holds the car in place till you use the throttle to move forward again. The fuel economy figure on the petrol automatic is 22.0 kmpl which again, is identical to the one you can get on the manual gearbox option.

So what is the verdict? Well, if you can spend that average of about Rs 50,000 on the automatic (AMT) or as Maruti Suzuki calls it, AGS – Auto Gear Shift, you should most certainly consider it. The good thing about the new Dzire is the fact that you can get the AMT option in the top of the line Z+ variant too which in turn means you can get a fully loaded car with the AMT option. The Ignis, which also has the AMT gearbox never offered that option. This means that you get the likes of the LED daytime running lights and LED headlamps along with the large touchscreen infotainment system while still enjoying the ease of the AMT gearbox. If I had to choose then, my pick would be the diesel engine with the AMT gearbox simply because of a combination of being a fun to drive car and yet offering phenomenal fuel economy.

heavy-duty trucks still tends to be dominated by automated manual transmissions (AMT).

IAV advance engineering process finds optimum system solution for every application
At the moment, the European market for heavy-duty trucks still tends to be dominated by automated manual transmissions (AMT). However, in many cases an alternative solution would lead to less fuel consumption. IAV has developed an advance engineering process that starts by considering all possible variants in order to supply the optimum system solution at the end.
There is a huge choice of transmissions, from manual transmissions via AMTs through to planetary and dualc l u t c h transmissions. However, the European truck segment is still dominated by AMTs as a particularly favorable solution in terms of production costs and efficiency. "But this could change in future", predicts Rico Resch, IAV project manager for transmission/hybrid systems, synthesis/concepts. "More and more OEMs implement downspeeding, for example, to reduce fuel consumption. But the lower engine speeds in the powertrain mean that higher torque is needed at the transmission input shaft to produce the same power output at the wheel. And so, power-shifting systems such as dual-clutch transmissions are currently a hot topic."

Optimum solution for each case

The example shows that there will never be one single ideal transmission system for all commercial vehicles. Instead, it is a case of finding the best possible solution for every individual case. And that is exactly the aim of the systematic advance engineering process with which IAV tackles this task. The experts examine two to three different variants for every type of transmission and work by means of elimination to filter out the particular solution with the greatest benefits in terms of efficiency, for example.
The process begins with IAV powertrain synthesis (see page 56), which supplies the initial possible configurations for the basic powertrain structure, including suggestions for the engine and transmission together with its transmission ratio series. This is an important input parameter for the next step where IAV's transmission synthesis supplies the best compromise from millions of variants. This is followed by 2D design of several options with computation of their loss maps. These in turn are used by the developers to simulate the longitudinal dynamics with IAV's Velodyn for Com Apps tool and then to calculate fuel consumption. "This is one of the key decision criteria for development to the manufacturing readiness level", says Resch. "In addition, costs also play a major role, so that we always consult our cost assessment specialists when selecting the best concept."

Modular system for various scenarios

To demonstrate the efficiency of the systematic advance engineering process, Resch and his colleagues have developed a transmission for a heavy-duty off-road truck. "This needs high drive power and constantly available driving force, uninterrupted where possible", explains Resch. "This would indicate a dual-clutch transmission or automatic planetary transmission; on the other hand, the market also offers AMTs with special shifting programs." At the end of the advance engineering process, a ninespeed automatic planetary transmission with two reverse gears proved to be a promising option on account of its high torque density and flexible power-shifting capability.
IAV's advance engineering process goes beyond developing just one single transmission. Indeed, it also offers a modular approach to obtain lower-cost solutions for derivatives such as buses, for example. In this specific case, the nine-speed automatic planetary transmission with two reverse gears can be modified into an automatic transmission with six forward and one reverse gear, containing many carry-over parts to save costs.

To aid this rising dominion of Hyundai in the Indian Market, they have come up with the most idealistic solution of introducing Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT) in their production line-up by 2018.
AMT uses an electronic control unit and a hydraulic system that supervises the use of the clutch and the gear shifting. It allows the driver to, either sequentially or fully automatically, change gear without using the clutch. It adds to the ease and convenience of a driver with the help of clutch-less gear shifts and concurrently is cheaper than a conventional automatic gearbox. This calls for novices to cherish and easy commuters to smile. So it is no wonder that the demand for AMT cars has gone up considerably. There is an exigency to bring about a balance between an aching left foot and a savings-focussed pocket and the AMT strives to fulfil that.
AMT technology has helped manufacturers boost volume sales in the mid-level hatchback and compact sedan segments. The difference in cost between AMT and manual transmission versions of cars is not very great. Moreover, the AMT does not cost as much as a conventional automatic gearbox.
Mr. Young Key Koo, Managing Director of HMIL, did not disclose which product would get the AMT, but said that gradually, all models in the model range will receive the technology. Hyundai’s adversaries like Maruti-Suzuki, have already stepped into the realm of AMTs by introducing it in 2014 starting with the Celerio and has reaped huge rewards in terms of rise in sales. Hyundai is rumoured to launch a small car in 2018 to rival the Renault Kwid. The car, codenamed Hyundai AH, could debut the Korean carmaker’s AMT technology by 2018.

Hyundai Cars In India To Get AMT

– The whole range will be equipped with AMTs for better volume sales by 2018
– AMTs provide the advantages of lesser cost, rider flexibility and better fuel economy
– This change comes after its competitors like Maruti Suzuki, Renault have already installed AMTs in their line-ups
– Likely to be introduced in Hyundai AH, a small car to rival the Renault Kwid by 2018
